Tournament Formats

Every sanctioned Monsnatch event runs one of four formats. They differ in where your cards come from and how a match is won — the game itself does not change.

Standard

Two decks you built, and you have to win with both.

01

Your own cards. You register two decks, called Deck A and Deck B.

Deck
2 decks × 10 Momon
Deck Points
max 25 per deck
Match
Best of 3
Round time
60 minutes (default)
  • One name across both decks. A card name may appear only once in the two decks combined, so you register twenty different cards.
  • Choose in secret. Before each game both players secretly pick one of their two decks and reveal the choice at the same time.
  • A winning deck is locked. Win a game with a deck and you cannot pick it again that match.
  • Win with both. You need one game win with Deck A and one with Deck B to take the match.

Players who build at home and want the deepest match to play.

Team Standard

Three players, three games at once, two wins take it.

02

Your own cards. Three players, one deck each, seats fixed at registration.

Team
3 players, seats A / B / C
Deck
1 deck × 10 Momon each
Match
3 games at once, BO1
Round time
20 minutes (default)
  • One name across the whole team. Thirty different cards between the three of you — check it together before you submit.
  • Seats are fixed. A faces A, B faces B, C faces C, and the order cannot change after registration.
  • Two wins take the team match, and all three games are still played and recorded.
  • No talking during the games — not even after your own game has finished.

A shop crew or a group of friends who want to play as one side.

Draft

Open packs at the table, pass them round, build from what you took.

03

Nothing. The event gives you three booster packs.

Deck

Match
Best of 1 · 20 minutes
  • Take one, pass the rest. Pack 1 passes right, pack 2 left, pack 3 right.
  • Silence at the table. No notes, no phones, no help, until every pool is registered.
  • Duplicates are fine. The one-name rule does not apply to Draft — if you drafted two, you may play two.
  • You keep a sideboard. Cards you drafted but left out can be swapped in between matches.

Anyone who wants an even start — nobody has a collection advantage.

Sealed

One pack. Those ten cards are your deck.

04

Nothing. The event gives you one booster pack.

Match
Best of 1 · 20 minutes
  • All ten cards play. You cannot leave one out and you cannot add one.
  • The deck is fixed for the whole event, not just the match.
  • Check your pack before you touch anything. Report a short or damaged pack to a judge straight away — after that a pack cannot be replaced wholesale.

A first tournament, or a quick event where everyone starts level.

How an event is run

The format decides your cards and your match. These decide the day.

Swiss
Everyone plays every round — you are paired against someone on the same score. Nobody is knocked out.
Top Cut
Swiss decides who advances, then those players play a single-elimination bracket.
Single elimination
Lose once and you are out. Used on its own for small brackets and for the cut.
Round Robin
Three or four players: everyone plays everyone once.
Rounds
5–8 players play 3 rounds · 9–16 play 4 · 17–32 play 5 · 33–64 play 6
Ranked
An event records ranking results only if it is sanctioned and at least five players start round 1.

Event levels

The same format is worth more at a bigger event. The level sets how much a result counts toward your ranking.

  1. 1
PlaygroundA shop evening or a first event. Points ×1.
  2. 2
Store ShowdownA shop’s main event. Points ×1.5.
  3. 3
Major LeagueA regional-scale event. Points ×2.
  4. 4
Master LeagueThe top tier. Points ×3.

Mini Pod

A side event that starts as soon as enough players are waiting, rather than at a fixed time. It runs one of the four formats above, on a shorter bracket, and is a good way to get a game in between rounds of a main event.
